Haven't played for such a long time! And I actually did really well, killing many times while still surviving. But I'm out of shape for FPS gaming, since I got a little dizzy from the view bob. Or maybe it's the crappy frame rate.

BST webmaster, banquet
POSTED AT 10:47 PM in General

Hmm, so looks like I've become co-webmaster next year for BST. Seems like every organization I get offered this, whether it actually happens or not. First was at IVCF (for 1 semester, but I think I got a bit lazy), then it was VSA (I felt I wasn't really part of it, so essentially declined), then Tomodachi (never got started really although I was willing, some logistical problems), and now this. Maybe it's a sign, but I seriously need to learn more if I want to consider this as a viable career path (PHP, MySQL, etc.)

There's also a banquet social for BST on Saturday at an Italian restaurant in Albany. I think we're supposed to bring max one guest at most if anyone would like to come. It's semi-formal, so no suits, but not tshirts either. I guess basically like business casual attire.

1.5 hour nap was good. Helped a lot.

Webcomics are good too! But it means I'm not studying.

A Modest Destiny - a new one, but pretty good. Will end soon I think.
Experimental Comic Kotone - an old one, forgot about it for awhile, but still going on.

RPGs
POSTED AT 03:32 AM in Gaming

That's what distracted me from studying. I enter this RPG phase quite often, and have done so since early childhood. Ever since I got my hands on an AD&D DMG book... and maybe even before that. I've lost faith in the D&D series though, with the 3.5 rules coming just 3 years after 3E. It's nothing more than a money machine to Hasbro/WotC. That's what happens when things get bought off by mainstream game companies (they make Magic: the Gathering, which also fell down the same hole with their Type 2 tournaments that require you to buy new cards all the time).

So I was looking for something else, in particular, I was looking at Exalted. Rather interesting premise, and really could work as an anime setting. Unfortunately, it seems like no commercial RPG books will ever be error-free.

Also came across 3 RPG rulesets for Final Fantasy, only the first of which I've heard of before.

Last day of classes!
POSTED AT 01:46 AM in General

Which was accompanied by me buying Exalted which I mentioned in my previous entry. Went to Safeway after classes to buy food and fried chicken. The guy messed up and gave me an extra wing, and replaced a thigh with a breast. Then I tried to finish it all within a mere 4 hours before the HKSA movie. That was rather painful, especially walking to Wheeler immediately after downing all that. >_<

And it turns out, I didn't even need to rush, because they were taking their sweet time doing their elections. Finally they finished and me, Leon, Karen, my roommates, and the HKSA people watched Infernal Affairs II. I'd forgotten a bit of what had happened in the first movie, so I was a little confused for awhile, even though this was a prequel. Leon was even more confused since he hadn't seen the first movie.

Afterwards, they went to get some boba then came to my place to watch a bunch of random stuff.

Eh, now I'm trying to do my reading.

BST Banquet
POSTED AT 01:38 AM in General

So we went to Il Porcino today, 11 people total. Food was decent, although portions was a tad small I think. But the free appetizer, and obligatory complementary bread + olive oil helped. We had a new waiter (1st day!)who messed up several times, but I don't think we minded too much. Jenny got a free tiramisu (big!) which was shared by everyone. Then Fang gave us all Christmas presents (brownie + assorted chocolate candy). Thanks Fang! Oh, and stupid rain!

Finally finished reading A Personal Matter by Kenzaburo Oe for my class. Two days, not bad. Borrowed it from the library 'cause I never bought the book since when I wanted to buy it, they didn't have it. Their loss.

Also finally finished my reading for Psych 127.

Movie review, studying, etc.
POSTED AT 02:53 AM in General

Finished Turn Left, Turn Right today. Unlike many other people when reviewing movies, I'll keep this rather spoiler-free (nothing that the viewer doesn't already know from pretty much the beginning). I personally found the fact that they kept passing each other by constantly rather aggravating. It's similar to watching a suspense/horror movie and wanting a character to turn around before something kills them. Also, the guy should've gotten a few more tips on how to act out violin playing.

Finished reading all of Psych 126 today! Although the last 20 pages was closer to skimming since I wanted to get it done and over with. The most productive time was when I was in the library for 2.5 hours. 40 pages/hour, which is basically the best I can do, especially with textbooks of that size. Popped over to Cory between CS Office Hours and Psych review to chat with Karen.

Goals for tomorrow. Finish all of the History reading, go to History review, and finish up Psych 127 practice exams.

My moral views
POSTED AT 11:22 PM in General

Stolen from Fang's blog. Take the test here.

I would recommend that you take the test before you look at my answers and reasonings, so that you don't get influenced by me.

So anyway, I chose Marion, Sheriff, Little John, Robin. The results were:

Such an emphatic rejection of ready-made values is probably partly camouflage. You hate to be thought weak or insecure. You value honesty, and abominate humbug and hypocrisy.

(Men) Women are very much part of your life, and you are - or perhaps would like to be - quite ruthless, both with women and life in general.

(Women) You are tolerant about men and their failings - but we mean men, for you have no time for boys on men's errands.

My reasoning as follows:

Marion - plainly a martyr. Willing to sacrifice herself for her beliefs. Out of the four, she has the most selfless goal.

Sheriff - this was a very complicated one. I didn't think about him neglecting his duty as much, maybe partly because I have a distaste of the so-called legal system. I actually felt he was "good" in a way in that he was willing to let Robin go for Marian's love, but at a cost. It could be argued that this was very practical of him, because he was 1) gaining some benefits for himself as well as 2) testing Marian's love for Robin, and the extent she was willing to go to save him. Finally, I felt he was also honorable in that he did keep his word and let Robin go even though he didn't actually have to.

Little John - eh, despicable. I felt he took advantage of Marian more than the Sheriff did. His redeeming quality is committment.

Robin - the worst, since he not only does not appreciate Marian's sacrifice, incapable of forgiveness, but also abuses her. His only redeeming quality, chastity is completely crushed beneath his other sins.

IE scam exploit
POSTED AT 10:27 PM in General

As has been mentioned on several sites now, this is another reason you should stop using Internet Explorer and switching to something better, like Mozilla Firebird.

As you can see, you've just been redirected back here, but your URL will now point to Paypal instead. Can you say, easy scamming? On mozilla, it'll show up as http://www.paypal.com%01@www.tabulas.com/~dracil instead. Basically, that %01 (or %00) will cause everything after it to not show up on Internet Explorer, making you think this is a legitimate site. And if they design the redirected site to look exactly the same as the real site, it won't be easy to tell at a glance if you're really at where you think you are.

BTW, even the Googlebar gets tricked by this.

Also, Microsoft also announced no more patches for December. So that means unless they break their promise, this ain't gonna be fixed for quite awhile. More reason to dump it and start using Firebird.

On another note, studying for my History exam has been extra productive.

History Final
POSTED AT 02:47 AM in General

That went pretty well I guess, relative to my Psych 127 final. Finished in about half the time. The required question was one of the questions I'd prepared well, so that went well, and so did the short answers. The free choice question was the one I probably did the worst on. The only thing that worries me is that I finished so much earlier than everyone else (although there were people who left before me). Hands ached from writing too fast, and also the pen I was using was crap. Oh, and the prof had cookies for us too when we were done.

Couldn't get motivated to study anything else for the rest of the night...

Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King and Murphy's Law
POSTED AT 04:26 AM in General

Seems like every year something goes wrong with my attempts at watching Lord of the Rings. Well, first year was just that everyone who was going to go watch the movie ended up bailing out at the last minute. Second year, had wanted to contact Peter, Leon, and David about going to see the movie, but couldn't get in touch. Went with my roommates and some other friends, then saw the aforementioned people as well as some Freeborn people. So we tried to find people to switch theaters with us. Click here to see more details of that day (the actual entry from that day). I don't remember what happend to Nick and Hai... since I don't remember them trying to switch theaters...

For this year, it started with yesterday. Found out Rebecca and her roommates had bought tickets. Then found out Seth and his roommates had done the same. But for different showings at different locations. -_-

Ended up opting for the earlier showing, but then found out that they had ordered it online and there were two different links for the midnight showing. Was supposed to be emailed at 2PM for which theater auditorium they were in, but Rebecca's roommate had an appointment, so I finally got a call at around 4PM from Rebecca. This was followed by me trekking back and forth through Berkeley for an hour to get the ticket. First I went to the theatre and noticed they didn't have the midnight showing, which they said was a mistake on Fandango's part and refused to sell me the ticket. When asked if I could get the ticket then if I ordered it through Fandango and came back, they just brushed me off with "I don't know!" Not exactly the best customer service there. -_- Then I went to Rebecca's place to confirm, and order it through Fandango. Then back to the theatre to get the ticket, which said 12:01 Wednesday, which caused quite a bit of worry, especially when the guy smirked when he printed the ticket out. -_-

Then apparently there was a mixup. I had thought I was going back to Rebecca's place to watch the extended version of The Two Towers before the movie. But of course, the mixup meant that didn't happen. But I had it burned, so I watched it on my own and managed to finish it in time for the movie (Rebecca called me at 11:10PM, about 5 minutes before I finished the movie). Ended up arriving there before them by a couple minutes. Being there early meant that we got good seats, except the two guys in front of us were a bit tall. Five people total. Me, Rebecca, her two roommates, and a friend of her roommate.

Now, to some thoughts about the movie. To avoid spoilers, I'm using a break tag.

(Click to read (spoilers!))

So there it is, can't wait for the Extended Version! :D And congrats to Rebecca for finishing all three movies in just 12 hours!

BTW, here's a useful site for you LotR fans. The Encyclopedia of Arda. And as usual, Dork Tower has some funny strips concerning the Lord of the Rings movie.

POSTED AT 12:48 AM in General

Yay, finally beat Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Interesting twist at the end.

Woke up late then went on a shopping errand today.

Stuff to do tomorrow

2) Finish the loaf of bread before it perishes.
3) Get photos for my Visa on Arrival and Diversity Immigrant Visa Program. 3) Buy N95 masks for SARS, as well as a water filter...
4) Remember the MP3 Cable along with box that needs to be taken home. Pack!
5) Perhaps find out what happens with the I-94 card and admissions number with the new SEVIS stuff...
6) Leave for airport, perhaps around 7-8PM since I'm always worrying something will happen an I'll be late.

Found out yesterday after watching LOTR that Karen has a journal! Found out today that Han has a journal! Both are now auto-linked!

Flight back
POSTED AT 08:21 AM in General

Oi, very long trip. First, the airline people made me sign some release form because I didn't have a ticket back from Thailand (for the Visa on Arrival), so that the airline wouldn't get in trouble. Flight itself was pretty decent. I was surrounded by girls. Watched The Medallion (it sucked!). Seems like they were trying to be PC with the double interracial marriage, and the special effects just did not fit at all. Rest of the stuff was just the usual, stereotypes and all. Slept for 6 hours. On the Taipei to Bangkok flight, I watched Sayonara, Kuro (was ok). After I got to the Thai airport, they didn't even ask me for my ticket back anyway, so all that fuss before was for nought.

After that, went to see my cousins and aunt from Taiwan (they're going back tomorrow for winter vacation), then went to Central (a department store) where I met my grandmother and some more relatives to buy me a new pair of shoes, then we went to dinner at a Chinese restaurant, where I met another cousin who offered me some networking opportunities (yay!).

Hmm, not too jet lagged, but very tired. Should recover fully by tomorrow I think. And as suspected, the cat's still just as cowardly and I'm sneezing again (cat allergies).

Some Family History
POSTED AT 09:33 PM in General

Apparently, my being a Webmaster for BST next semester was exciting news to my family. Well, first, my dad kept announcing it to everyone saying that I've become pro-independence in jest. Was a bit annoying, even if it was only a joke. I think one of my aunt clapped at that (my father's side is pro-independence). Asked a bit about my family history. On my mother's side, my grandmother and grandfather moved to Taiwan in the 1930s. My father's side has been in Taiwan for a lot longer. My grandmother's father was actually a policeman for the Japanese. My grandfather was adopted, so we have no idea of the history beyond that. Interesting fact: My grandfather on my mother's side had come to China with the pigtails fashionable centuries ago in china. He failed to bow to a Japanese policeman who walked past who pulled his pigtail and also beat him. He shaved his head after that and I think kept it that way for the rest of his life as an act of defiance or something. On the other hand, my grandmother (father's side) did not really experience any trouble from the Japanese, although the Taiwanese were actually treated as second class citizens by the Japanese at the time.

Also, discovered that one of the Blistex Lip Balm I bought at Walgreens was actually empty! Either there was a manufacturing error or someone must have stolen it. Bah, feel ripped off.

That's what my house is, and that's what the cats in the neighborhood know it as. Opened the door a little while ago and two cats came by and tried to come in. Meanwhile, our cat is probably still hiding under the stairs...

Last night's buffet definitely brought out the worst in people, as it always does when something that's wanted is limited. In this case, resources were the free food. Pushing, shoving, and hoarding. And also waste. Hopefully, tonight's dinner won't be like that (unlikely, as it's a paid buffet).

The university also had performances and booths for the students. Sort of like Calapalooza, but at night. Berkeley doesn't have anything like it unfortunately, since night gathering's are usually inside classrooms.

A Christian Forum done right

These are quite a rare sight. Most Christian forums will either be biased towards Protestantism or Catholicism, with the other side being bashed while the bashers claim they "do it out of love". Right...

Christian Forums though, specifically prohibits each denomination from bashing other denominations within their forums.

They're also one of the few that actually recognizes that a lot of Christians are Theistic Evolutionists. Maybe this is why there are so many people there.

The whole blessings/reputation thing and little icons signifying people's faiths, nationality, etc. is a nice touch too. More forums in general should have something like that.

The car with a dentist reading about dreams of a university
POSTED AT 02:26 AM in General

My dad got his new car yesterday. It's a Toyota Matrix. I think. It can fit six people and has some automatic stuff (lights, door unlocking?). The old car was running out of replacement parts...

Had a surprise visit to the dentist yesterday. Mainly 'cause I wasn't told I had an appointment till we were about to leave. Took a long time, 45 minutes of gum cleaning. Probably longer than usual because I haven't gone in one year.

Also finished A Clash of Kings yesterday. 6 days for just under 1000 pages. I need to ration the third book, A Storm of Swords or I won't have enough for the flight back. This one has about 1100 pages though. The fourth book, A Feast for Crows, is coming out in April!

Had a weird dream last night too. Dreamt that a girl I liked had a boyfriend. Actually managed to wake me up. So I guess that makes it a nightmare. It also signifies something that I don't really wanna admit... damn my subconsious thought processes! But still... >_<

Today, went to the university my mom teaches at (Assumption University (ABAC)). It's a private catholic university, so, looks a lot better than Berkeley. Actually reminds me a bit of Stanford. Has a grand/majestic feel to it. Lots of marble and nice looking stairs and ceilings. Apparently, if I go to grad school there, it will be free because my mom will have been there for 2 years now. Except, this is the undergraduate branch, and the grad school branch isn't as nice looking. My mom kept trying to entice me to go because of the free education, as well as good-looking girls who are smart and rich. -_-

Too much incense at church today. I wonder if that's why my throat hurt a bit while singing.

There were two Chinese girls there who were obviously not Catholic. We thought they were tourists at first, but it turns out they were students there (the church is inside the university). When one of them went up to take communion (which they aren't supposed to do), the other one took a picture of her, and she didn't eat it either for awhile, but was instead, inspecting the host. After mass, they were going around taking pictures but also touching stuff and basically playing around. My dad got mad at them and lectured one of them for a bit (the other fled).

China vs. CHINA

For those who don't understand Chinese, basically, the first picture was made by people in mainland China. The text says, "Without this dot, it's no longer a proper China". In response, some Taiwanese people capitalized the word, and changed the text to read, "With this dot, it's no longer a normal China". Oh, and they changed the text from Simplified Chinese to Traditional Chinese too.

The other problem was that originally, they had Printer Sharing between the two computers, but that obviously didn't work when the computer on the right lost its network connection. Eventually, the computer technicians didn't know what to do, so they just connected the printer to the left computer, and they still couldn't get the computer on the right to print. I just added a new network printer on the right and that worked. Err, and they actually pay these people money? They should hire me instead!

Some people actually showed up for my mom's lecture, even though they didn't have to come, but my mom was giving extra points if they came. They're about the same age as me, but they all thought I looked really young. -_-
