So I got up at 8:30 to go to breakfast at 9:00. Just bagels. My host never came home. But
Diana had a sadder tale to tell. She finally went to bed, but people kept going in and out of the room, and they kept asking who the heck she was. And they would pull her sleeping bag to see who she was. Rather rude. Eventually, her host came back at 5AM, then gossiped with her roommate for another hour. So
Diana never got any sleep. Poor
Diana. And she's still up even now, so... she should crash when she finally does go to sleep.
First workshop, on Taiwanese identity, I nodded off eventually. Then it was small group and lunch. That was ok. Then it was a lecture by some French guy. Also nodded off. Then it was a workshop by Rosie and Lily. That I did not fall asleep in.
Oh, and of this, I wanted to talk about something I'd been planning to write for quite some time. So the thing is, they were talking about how there were Asian American circles at their old schools and how they didn't belong because they dared call themselves Taiwanese-Americans, which alienated them from the predominantly Chinese-Americans. But yeah, so I've been looking at the type of people I've been hanging around over the years.
Back in K-12, I hung around several different circles actually. There was the Taiwanese group that I hung around with. There was the non-in crowd Thai group that I hung around with (vs. the in-crowd group, which included some actual singers and stuff). There was also the one group that I can't really describe. It was the more cultured/international/successful group, or basically, composed of the high acheivers and people who were really up to date with current events and just generally seemed like those who were most likely to succeed. The ethnicity of that group also seemed to be more varied. But yeah, I generally hung around the fringe of most of the group. There was another group that I might call the "library" group that was composed of various members from those groups though, which as the name might suggest, hung around the library a lot. Since that was my favorite spot, it was composed of people I'd meet together during lunch or free period to play cards, chess, or whatever fit our fancy at the time.
At college, during the first year, it was just with whoever was at Freeborn, especially 6th floor people. Sophomore year, I joined
Karen's fellowship, so my group of people shifted to Christians and HK people. Junior year, I started to break away from the fellowship as people I knew started to leave too. I started to hang around Vietnamese people a bit. And now finally, in my Senior year, I'm hanging around Taiwanese people a lot, which was one of my big complaints during Freshman year (that I didn't really know any Taiwanese people at all). That was partly because I'd tried to join the TSA club at the time, but after the first event, Daniel said that they'd called me anti-social, despite the fact that I'd actually tried to be social. So because of that, I never went back.
So back to ITASA. Then it was another speaker by Roger Fan of Better Luck Tomorrow fame. He was better than I expected, and reminded me of Jim Carrey occasionally in the way he spoke. Then another small group, where our group size suddenly doubled. Then it was another workshop on Taiwanese language. I sort of nodded off only once, but managed to stay awake for the rest.
Then it was a mad rush to the dorm to change to get ready to the banquet. And for our rush, we (
Fang and I) were actually one of the first ones there! People trickled in later. Food was good! Well, then again, this was supposed to be the highlight of the event anyway. We boxed the leftovers. Then the rest of the night, there were huge issues about not having enough rides, and whether or not people were staying for the party, etc. Tempers flaring throughout the night from stress and miscommunications. But anyway, people wanted to stay to party. =/ Again, my group was the first one there. The Stanfurd people just assumed we were all 21, but I didn't want to drink, so no wristband for me.
Diana and
Sophia went crazy with the drinks.
Sophia actually went up to the drink guy and asked him to pour vodka into her cup. The guy kept looking at his friend and laughing.
Diana then did the same. So, after awhile the others came, and me and Charlie just sat around or went outside to find a bathroom once (without the long lines). Eventually, we got
Joyce to leave. But not before
Fang tried to make good on her promise to get the girls to dance around me, which I evaded. I can actually get a bit stubborn at stuff like this. Perhaps I really am antisocial? It's not necessarily that I totally refuse to dance (since I've given in to peer pressure before), but such a thick crowd of people is really a turnoff. I heard later that they did quite a bit of freaking. O_o Oh, the temptation.
Anyway, some pissed off people later (the logistics stuff), we were finally on our way. Except we got lost. And went up a mountain, during which, I kept getting ideas for short horror stories. For example, we went through some really thick fog, and I kept thinking about Stephen King's The Langoliers or just the Twilight Zone in general (go through the fog, arrive in some other dimension). Or when
Joyce said we should lock our doors when we went through some small town/gas station, I said "Ghost Town"

Anyway, we did see a California Red Fox that kept trying to run away from our car.
Fang wanted to take a picture, but eventually it darted off to the other side of the road.
After a quarter of the gas tank, and one hour later,
Joyce finally realized we were in Redwood City, awhile later, we were back in Stanfurd, and finally, we were on our way. Then we finally got home perhaps 30 minutes ago. And because of the stupid Daylight Savings Time, it's now 5:15AM. Sucky. Oh yeah, as usual, the journal entries will be shown 1 our early until DST changes back.
Oh, one final note. I spelled it "Stanfurd" on purpose.

Also, the people were actually pretty nice. Except for the Vanishing Hosts magic tricks...
