RIAA/MPAA terrorist organizations?
POSTED AT 01:26 PM in General

http://it.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=04/12/31/1553231

Several things that come to mind.

1) One more reason not to use WMA/WMV files
2a) Isn't this a terrorist act under some US law?
2b) If so, still feel like giving money to these terrorist organizations?
3) Microsoft should sue them.

Afterwards, I looked around and found the following 18 USC Section 1030(a)(5) and 18 USC Section 2332b(g)(5)(b)

IANAL, but by default, it seems this currently makes the RIAA/MPAA felons.

However, if a government worker downloaded it on a government computer, it would become an act of terrorism.

POSTED AT 02:07 AM in General

Yay, one application is officially done! Not without a lot of phone calls today, but my last letter writer submitted about 1.75 hours before the deadline.

Also have a digital photo for the lottery thanks to Diana's digital camera. :D

And before that, we went to Tapioca Express, along with Jenny and her friends Chris and Nick just to hang out.

Now for the rest of my applications...

Lots of click-click-clicks and no heat and air.

Landlord's coming in soon to clean some mildew on the walls, so I'll probably see if I can get him to look into it at the same time.

Bleah on the gas bills though. It's basically $1-2 per day I decide to use it.

Website fixed, another application done
POSTED AT 06:01 PM in General, Website

Woah, I think I pulled a "Catherine" Woke up *really* late today. Think it was almost 10 hours of total sleep.

Ok, most of the my site has been fixed now. My Bookcrossing button refuses to show up because of something about how the engine parses /referral/ strings in URLs, possibly because of the new advert tag required in Tabulas. On the other hand, and the tagboard tag puts the tagboard 5 pixels lower for some odd reason. And custom moods don't work. None of which I can really fix and it's up to Roy. Other than that, everything's back to normal.

Now for some positive things to say about this change. Multi-category posting is good. And there's now a "watching" field as well, and since I can technically edit what it says, I could use it for other stuff.

UCI application is also fully completed now(letters all submitted as well).

Edit: The referral thing was actually something I'd done to block ads with Firefox. Oops.

Hack attempt, Mahou senshi Negima
POSTED AT 12:51 AM in General

Heh, Infidelguy.com got hacked. Didn't see the defacing, but got an email from the admin about it.

Mahou Senshi Negima - watched the first episode of this. It's um, interesting. By the same creator of Love Hina, and definite harem anime. And the girls are very stereotypical as well. There's even a what appears to be an older version of Multi. O_o I remember someone commented that the kid looked like Harry Potter when the manga first came out as well.

Almost done with 3rd app, dinner with some BST folks
POSTED AT 10:05 PM in General

Mailed UC Davis stuff today. Went to dinner with David, Diana, and Chih at 168 later as well.

Highlights of the conversation

Aaron: "It's sad... I prefer Sweetheart's Boba to the real thing" (knowledge of Chinese probably necessary to know the meaning of that )

Hehe, also didn't know Aaron had thought so much about getting non-monetary payments from his female tutees either.

Oh, and of course, Diana "taking it off!" :D

Victory, feet, gEECS

My feet hurt. A lot. Think it started yesterday I think from walking around campus. Must've done something but it hurts when I try to walk for extended period of time on the left part of my left foot.

Even so, went to Cory for gEECS. Henry and James were playing Set when I arrived, then we played Category 5 with a girl whose name I don't really know how to spell. James first, me second, Henry third, and the girl fourth. Then there was a long game of Carcassone in which I won the farm wars. :D The girl left, Henry left, and Daniel arrived. So we played Attika, and Daniel won that one.

Prejudice? Or just PC BS
POSTED AT 12:34 AM in General

Saw an interesting ad at a bus station the other day. It said "I find that Puerto Rican guy to be very levelheaded." Apparently they think it's politically incorrect and prejudiced to say "Puerto Rican." My question is, why? Why not strike out "guy" instead? Aren't you being sexist by using "guy?" Why distinguish between male or female? Just say "person." For that matter, I'm sure some animal rights activists would be disgruntled and would rather humans and animals be treated the same. So we should rewrite the sentence as "I find that organism to be very levelheaded." But wait, that's still discriminating against non-living matter. So let's just say "I find that dense mass of matter to be very levelheaded." Ah, much better, wouldn't you say? Or maybe, we should just forget about silly things like this and not go against natural human functioning and need to categorize things in the world so they can be differentiated from each other.

After all, if there was a group of guys, and you simply say "I find that guy to be very levelheaded" , by just saying "guy," the listener won't be able to distinguish which guy you are talking about, so descriptors like "Puerto Rican" are perfectly fine. It's not like "Puerto Rican" was a derogatory term, in which case they *would* have a case about this being a prejudiced statement.

Anyway, UC Davis application fully done! :D

No karaoke
POSTED AT 11:03 AM in General

(backdated entry)

Tabulas was down -_-

Decided not to go to karaoke with the BST peeps. The value of my going just isn't as high as other people's I think. No one understands what I sing (and as someone basically said during hotpot, since they don't understand it, they don't really care for it, which isn't really surprising, but does confirm my view). No one can really sing what I sing. And I don't really listen to their music either, so I can't really sing what they sing. Sure, there are a few exceptions to all the previous statements, but most of these people have either left, aren't here, or didn't come. Besides, it's kinda boring singing the same songs each time as well, which is the other problem. Their song selection, which dazzled me the very first time I had gone several years back, is actually not that great. Their target customers are really the Chinese singers, so the rest of us get lower-class treatment. Not to mention the song requests are essentially useless, as they naturally only really focus on the popular, money-earning Chinese songs. Besides, by my not going, not only is the hourly rate cheaper, but the number of songs each person can sing/hour also increases as well.

I've also generally noticed the ones who seem to want to go to karaoke so often are the ones who do sing the Chinese songs and get to sing songs with other people...

Naps, Lolita Complex
POSTED AT 01:51 AM in General, Philosophy

Looks like a day for naps today. Jenny tried to nap in the morning. Then Karen and I both napped in the evening.

Naps are strange. I feel like I sleep for a long time, but in actuality, only maybe 15-30 minutes pass every time I check my watch. And I still feel sleepy.

Interesting discussion on Lolicons at Megatokyo and at Hongfire. If you don't know what Lolicons are, it stands for lolita complex. And if you don't know what lolita is... it's basically underaged *or* underaged-looking girls. In the context of the discussions though, it deals specifically with drawings of said girls, and whether or not it's something "bad." The following is an amalgam of what's been discussed in the forums, as well as some of my personal opinions.

On one hand, we have the people who think lolicon is some great evil akin to paedophilia and people lusting after *real* children. But really, when you think about it, this is just a different face to the people complaining about how violent games will incite people to go murder people for fun. While most people will agree with the latter scenario (the violent games), they somehow have some issue with the former (the lolicon stuff). Some people do seem to forget that the arguments in both cases are really the same. They need to deal with their cognitive dissonance somehow before getting back in the discussion, either be anti-both, or at the very least tolerating of it (you don't have to like it necessarily), which is the second camp which I'll get to later. But let's address the arguments here first anyway. In both cases, no real person is harmed in its making. It provides an outlet for people as well to live out their fantasies. Even if you take these things away, those desires will be there, suppressed, waiting to find an outlet, which will just spill over into the real world. What, you say games did not exist in the past? Think again. Remember the gladiatorial combats? Sports are an evolution of that. It's a lot tamer now (you don't fight to the death), but it's still a release of hormones and urge to dominate each other. And so the same goes for lolicon. They live out their fantasies, and that's the end of that. Wait, now you want to tell me that living out these fantasies actually *increase* our desire to do these things? Right. When I play Tetris, I have an overwhelming urge to go align myself next to objects. *rolls eyes* Ok, so what about the lunatics? The ones that really can't separate reality from fiction? Well, they are going to be a threat no matter what you do. It's like saying we should ban driving because there will always be the reckless drivers who will cause accidents and kill people.

Also, the reasoning behind why lolicon is bad is also misguided. Is it really the age? Not really. Lolicon is really a desire for a certain look or personality. Age has nothing to do with it really. We can see this when games are imported from Japan. The age of the characters, who are usually in middle school or high school, gets artificially bumped to 18+ and the setting gets changed to college. Suddenly the people complaining will find it ok. Um, yeah, whatever. As someone commented, it's kind of absurd to give an age to a piece of drawing. And since when did drawings have basic human rights? Or you have some people who look really young. Even if they're really of legal age. People brought up the picture of Yuko Ogura. She looks like a teenage kid, but she's actually 22. To better illustrate the point that age is not what gets lolicons fetishist's fancy. Which of these do you think is more "wrong" to go after and which do you think the lolicons will go after? A 1,000 year-old alien/magical being that looks like a 12-year-old human girl, or an 8-year-old artificially created girl (with the mind of an 8-year old) that has the body of a full-grown woman in her thirties?

Finally, what does "underage" really mean? A lot of people have some kink with anything below 18 because that's what their particular society tells them. But seriously, in many countries, the age of consent is below 18, like 14 or 16. They aren't really "underage" until they're 13 or 15. To impose your country's restrictions on them is nothing more than moral arrogance. Besides, is an 18 year old and a 16 year old that much worse than a 50-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman? I'd actually find the latter to be more distasteful.

And as someone said, if some day, your country suddenly made the age of consent to be 40. Does that mean you are suddenly a sick lolicon/paedophile because you are in love with a 38-year-old? I trust you will realize the answer is no. Especially when you consider it wasn't that long ago that girls were married off when they reached puberty (after all, we do treat the rest of the animal kingdom as adults as soon as they are reproductively viable right?)

As for the second camp of people, these are the people who understand that it's a matter of taste. It's not their taste, but they aren't so daft as to go about regulating other people's behaviors. Some like missionary positions, some like it from behind, some have feet fetishes, some like being in diapers, some like being pissed on, some like eating fecal matter. Some like Asian women, some like blond hair, some like huge breasts, some like people of the same gender, some like hermaphrodites, some like skinny women, some like fat women, some like mature (old) women, and some like young girls. Yeah, in real life, the young girl one could be considered exploitative, but remember, we aren't talking about child porn. We're talking about some ink on paper. By limiting one person's fetish, you are only asking for your own fetishes to be restricted. But certainly, there are people out there who won't be satisfied until everyone has sex with their partner in a missionary position with the sole purpose of making babies and nothing else.

Finally of course, there's the third camp of people. The ones who are lolicons. The biggest thing one should realize is that not of all this attraction is even sexual to begin with. A lot of people simply like the look of innocence, and child-like wonderment of kids. This is actually very natural. Just look at how many people think babies, kittens, puppies, and so on are the cutest things in the world. Are these people all sick fetishists who want to have sex with babies, kittens, and puppies? I think not (and I seriously hope not).

Hmm, I am predicting this entry will either get a lot of responses from people who feel strongly about the subject (and the entry'll probably get me some Google searches because of the words I used), or people will avoid it like the plague because of the subject matter.

Shen's birthday
POSTED AT 01:08 AM in General

Shen's birthday yesterday now. Koryo Charcoal BBQ with a lot of people. We actually did the charcoal thing. It doesn't take that long to cook, except for the chicken, which they cooked for us. 'twas really embrassing after dinner though. Not only were we short 4 dollars, that wasn't including the tip! Doh. Too much money involved = not good.

Afterwards, it was to their place for the cake. Then we played Mao. There was a guy who completely didn't get it again, kinda ruined the fun. People left afterwards, but played a game of Category 5 with Shen and Chester. Shen won with 33, I had 34, and Chester had 73 or so.

Mingling with friends
POSTED AT 12:26 AM in General

Shen, Chester, and Jennifer came by today. Shen came to get the second CD of Kung Fu Hustle, and Chester/Jennifer came by to borrow my sleeping bag (something shady going on? )

Afterwards, went to their place to watch Kung Fu Hustle. Maurice also came to watch as well. Afterwards, managed to get in another game of Category 5, where I lost by two points to Chester, and Shen blew up. They all went to karaoke after that, and again, I declined for essentially the same reasons I declined karaoke earlier this week. Although it might've been better going with a fresh group, a lot of them wanted to go to Music Box, which is untested ground. And more than half the people I don't know as well either, and almost all would probably be singing in Cantonese.

I went to get dinner at Bongo Burger, and they actually forgot my order! So my dinner ended up taking an entire hour. -_-

Been reorganizing my music recently. Getting rid of my MP3 collection for FLAC and APE versions. Size = about 4-10x bigger, but it's perfect quality.

Been having some interesting discussions with people through comments on blogs these past couple days as well.

Stolen...
POSTED AT 11:41 AM in General

That's what it is...

Yes, the worst has come to pass. Person went on a spree over the night, which didn't actually show up till now.

Denny's, 7-11, Chevron, and Winner's Corner (only this one was denied).

Bank's already blocked the card, and will go through with the disputes so I should be able to get my money back. They're already sending me a new card.

But my student ID is lost permanently, since I can't get a new one as I'm no longer a student. This has a bit of a sentimental value...

Safeway card is replaceable.

Social Security Card (not good), but replaceable.

The B&N gift card David gave me is lost. (also some sentimental value as a birthday present)

Various retailer cards lost

Keycard to the research lab (probably invalid already anyway)

And a couple rent checks from my roommates are lost. Trying to salvage this ASAP (by getting them to cancel and then rewrite the checks).

~$10-15 in cash

Two library Xerox cards (one empty, one still had a bit left I think)

Of course, I lost my bag+wallets (sentimental value), and the Go book (was free, so not important), and about $5 worth of oranges.

Filed a police report as well.

Just my luck to have the bag picked up by a low-life.

The good news is that my grad school application charges already went through, so it won't cause problems from my card being blocked. At first they couldn't confirm that, so I was worried that the people hadn't actually taken the payment yet, which would block the application fee and thus my application.

It does mean though that I can't do online applications until the new card comes either this week or next week. And I need to switch all my online billing stuff to the new card.

POSTED AT 03:03 AM in General

Feeling a bit empty. Although most of the damage is recoverable (with a net loss of maybe $100 in cash + items), the loss of some irrecoverable items and the fact that my stuff was basically stolen within 30 minutes after I left it on the bus (since I called AC Tranist as soon as I got home, and they searched the bus [and I'm pretty sure now that it was the right bus] and came up with nothing), and the guy went all the way to around Sacramento to use it during the night, which means this is probably a hardened criminal (who else would have the time to go around shopping until 7AM Monday morning?).

The last time I've felt this empty was probably when I missed my CS61c exam, or maybe when I got rejected from the CS major... of course, the insomnia that accompanies this sucks.

Router, hanging out
POSTED AT 02:26 AM in General, Gaming

Router went completely crazy earlier today. Internet died, couldn't access router (takes forever), so I did my usual unplug-replug routine, still didn't work. Tried modem next. Nope. Tried connecting modem to computer, that worked. Tried router again, nope. In fact, now I completely can't access the router. Try pressing the reset button on the router. Didn't work. Odd. Manually configured my computer settings to what it would be if it were connected to the router. There we go. But not internet access. Hmm... despite my pressing the reset button on the router, all the settings are still there. Reset it through my browser. Ah, now my computer and router can detect each other properly. Enter in settings again. Internet works.

What a crappy router.

Went to Koryo with Diana, Jenny, Charlie, Leo, Eric, and Chih. Didn't mess up the bills this time, so that was good. Afterwards, people came to my house to watch a movie, sans Leo and Charlie, but people then didn't want to watch a movie, and instead wanted to play games, so we eventually went to David's place. Played a couple rounds of my version of Uno, then one game of Big 2 that was blah. No one wanted to play my games either. Eventually ended up playing Taboo, which was ok I guess. Diana/David/Eric's team won. Then we went to Sweetheart's for some boba and chatting before retiring afterwards.

Got ridiculed a bit for my interests while people were at my place. -_-
