Yesterday's birthday dinner
POSTED AT 03:22 PM in General

Whoops, forgot to update yesterday...

Mmm, it was Joyce's birthday dinner. Went out a bit early, good to know for certain now that the bus takes me pretty much directly to the bart station. After I arrived, I didn't see anyone for a while since they were on the other side of the parking lot, and I was expecting some people to have been on the bart as well, but it turned out they took an earlier one. But I wasn't the last one as Catherine arrived later with David coming in last with Joyce.

We ate at a Japanese restaurant. Food was decent, with free ice cream. There was cake. We didn't use 2 candles, so it needs to be used soon or it can't be used till someone's 32. Everyone seems about the same although Sophia has really poofy head now, which people described as looking like Marge's sisters' hairstyle in The Simpsons.

RIAA Victim Countersues!
POSTED AT 04:11 PM in General

Tanya Andersen, a 41 year old disabled single mother living in Oregon, has countersued the RIAA for Oregon RICO violations, fraud, invasion of privacy, abuse of process, electronic trespass, violation of the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, negligent misrepresentation, the tort of "outrage", and deceptive business practices.
Article

About time!

And before those of you who don't read articles decide to jump on her as being just another pirate/thief/whatever derogatory label you like, she also claims to 1) not like the "gangster rap" which was allegedly downloaded, 2)never downloaded music, 3)is not awake at 4:24am when this allegedly occurred 4) does not know the "gotenkito" username. She even asked them to insepect her computer themselves, to which they refused.

And here's the kicker.
15. An employee of Settlement Support Center admitted to Ms. Andersen that he believed that she had not downloaded any music. He explained, however, that Settlement Support Center and the record companies would not quit their debt collection activities because to do so would encourage other people to defend themselves against the record companies’ claims.

Class stuff
POSTED AT 01:21 AM in General

Yay, got a good score on a project (they didn't notice my missing test which would've caused a failure), although everyone did well. Midterm tomorrow.

Finished Harry Potter 3. And my fan needs oiling again.

Midterm
POSTED AT 01:35 AM in General

Eep, that midterm was worse than expected. Twice the points of that old midterm he gave us to practice, and about twice as hard too! Think I did ok though.

Labor Force
POSTED AT 04:15 PM in General

Oops. I'm employed. That was a little unexpected. Last I heard, there were at least three other applicants so I didn't think I'd be asked to come in tomorrow right after the interview.

I have to wake up early now on Thursdays. >_<

Well, at least I'll have a little money now.

It's not a big thing, just being a lab monitor and the pay is actually kinda low, but whatever.

Work
POSTED AT 09:04 PM in General

First day was alright. I broke the padlock, but apparently it had been broken before, so it was bound to break again anyway. As I said before, the work's not hard, but there isn't any time to do my homework either. But today's in the "main" lab, supposedly the other lab will be less work, so maybe more free time.

Went to bed at 10PM yestserday to make sure I could wake up early. I can probably go to bed at like 11 or 12 today and not be tired.

Lots done
POSTED AT 12:14 AM in General

Stuff for yesterday that I wanted to add:
1) Didn't sleep well, kept waking up
2) Professor was actually stumped by a bug as he coded in real-time for us. After 20 minutes, he finally figured out he was missing the word "public" in front of "class"... yay, professors are human!

As for today, got my midterm back, 2nd highest score, along with 2 other people, so I'm pretty happy about that. Didn't get any question completely wrong, and was mainly docked for minor things in the short answer sections.

Also just completed my webcrawler project! So many last minute bugs because of ambiguous design specs. >_<

Now to get to bed so I can wake up for work...

No time!
POSTED AT 10:22 PM in General

Eep, tired. Bed. Now.

Too many people's birthdays in the next two weeks, and too many projects and midterms due at the same time (well, I basically have something due like every week)

Oh, and tonight had the worst fog I've seen so far. But I didn't actually feel cold walking back.

This just sucks
POSTED AT 01:19 AM in General

Oh. Em. Gee.

I just wasted the past 11 hours trying to figure out why I couldn't get images to display on my HTTP server project using PrintStream.

Then I actually looked at my code, and decided to try using DatOutputStream. Boom, it worked. -_-

Well, for one day of coding, I've got most of the project nailed down already (only real thing left is threading). Just this one thing really really really sucked.

Break
POSTED AT 01:52 AM in General

Because of yesterday, I decided to take a break from my project, aside from during my work time. That's the good thing about my job, I can do my homework/project, especially on the days that I'm in Cowell (3 out of 4 days), since there's usually a class in one or both of the rooms, and because there's fewer people, there's fewer interruptions.

Done + birthday dinner!
POSTED AT 01:16 AM in General

Yay, done with project! Yay, done with Harry Potter 4! Yay, sleep!

Today, we went out for Catherine's birthday dinner (early). Went all the way to Davis to eat at Fuji, which was Japanese buffet, and it was relatively cheap. It had the boat style thing, and really only that. Finished 15 plates before I gave up. Then we went through a corn maze. Then we went to Jenny and her roommate T(h)eresa's apartment, and then we went home and I finished my project.

Now for some rest.

Why Intelligent Designists are hypocrites
POSTED AT 11:59 AM in General, Philosophy

Link

For the lazy:
The only debate on Intelligent Design that is worthy of its subject

Moderator: We're here today to debate the hot new topic, evolution versus Intelligent Des---

(Scientist pulls out baseball bat.)

Moderator: Hey, what are you doing?

(Scientist breaks Intelligent Design advocate's kneecap.)

Intelligent Design advocate: YEAAARRRRGGGHHHH! YOU BROKE MY KNEECAP!

Scientist: Perhaps it only appears that I broke your kneecap. Certainly, all the evidence points to the hypothesis I broke your kneecap. For example, your kneecap is broken; it appears to be a fresh wound; and I am holding a baseball bat, which is spattered with your blood. However, a mere preponderance of evidence doesn't mean anything. Perhaps your kneecap was designed that way. Certainly, there are some features of the current situation that are inexplicable according to the "naturalistic" explanation you have just advanced, such as the exact contours of the excruciating pain that you are experiencing right now.

Intelligent Design advocate: AAAAH! THE PAIN!

Scientist: Frankly, I personally find it completely implausible that the random actions of a scientist such as myself could cause pain of this particular kind. I have no precise explanation for why I find this hypothesis implausible --- it just is. Your knee must have been designed that way!

Intelligent Design advocate: YOU BASTARD! YOU KNOW YOU DID IT!

Scientist: I surely do not. How can we know anything for certain? Frankly, I think we should expose people to all points of view. Furthermore, you should really re-examine whether your hypothesis is scientific at all: the breaking of your kneecap happened in the past, so we can't rewind and run it over again, like a laboratory experiment. Even if we could, it wouldn't prove that I broke your kneecap the previous time. Plus, let's not even get into the fact that the entire universe might have just popped into existence right before I said this sentence, with all the evidence of my alleged kneecap-breaking already pre-formed.

Intelligent Design advocate: That's a load of bullshit sophistry! Get me a doctor and a lawyer, not necessarily in that order, and we'll see how that plays in court!

Scientist (turning to audience): And so we see, ladies and gentlemen, when push comes to shove, advocates of Intelligent Design do not actually believe any of the arguments that they profess to believe. When it comes to matters that hit home, they prefer evidence, the scientific method, testable hypotheses, and naturalistic explanations. In fact, they strongly privilege naturalistic explanations over supernatural hocus-pocus or metaphysical wankery. It is only within the reality-distortion field of their ideological crusade that they give credence to the flimsy, ridiculous arguments which we so commonly see on display. I must confess, it kind of felt good, for once, to be the one spouting free-form bullshit; it's so terribly easy and relaxing, compared to marshaling rigorous arguments backed up by empirical evidence. But I fear that if I were to continue, then it would be habit-forming, and bad for my soul. Therefore, I bid you adieu.

Behe on Astrology
POSTED AT 08:38 PM in General

Under cross examination, ID proponent Michael Behe, a biochemist at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, admitted his definition of “theory” was so broad it would also include astrology.

I think this is pretty damning evidence showing why ID does not belong in classrooms.

Crunch time again
POSTED AT 01:20 AM in General

Midterm on monday, project due Tuesday, first release for other project one week after that.

Midterm I'm probably ok with, did most of the more urgent project today, but that first release project is gonna be a pain I think.

Saturday (today now) is another birthday, and I decided to cancel the one for Sunday.

Long weekend
POSTED AT 11:34 PM in General

So... yesterday, left at like 1:20 to go to my aunt's place to pick up a few more things, then waited for David to pick me up for his birthday dinner. We went to Ophelia's and most people got hotpot or one of the combo plates. There were two cakes, but we only brought out one. Afterwards, we went to Teatime for boba, and service there sucked. David and Eric started playing Chinese Chess, and the rest of us started playing a variant form of Connect Dragon. The store closed at 1AM so we had to leave, so we went to David's place to continue. Around 3:30, we finally finished our card game. I had a very satisfying last round where I completely screwed several people and allowed Frank to tie with two Jenny and Joyce for first place (for most of the rounds, the guys had the highest scores (high=bad), probably because the guys were on my left), and pushed Sophia to second-to-last place. Aaron never really recovered from being in last place from the first round. People said I was evil in the way I played, since I wasn't playing to necessarily win, but rather to screw other people up. :D

Then there was a problem of getting home, it was late, and I live out of the way, so I decided to crash at David's place. Met his mom in the morning. Finally got David awake by 12:30 and got home a little after 2.

Managed to finish Harry Potter 5 in the meantime, and it's back to class stuff.

Some stuff
POSTED AT 11:31 PM in General

In anticipation of my paycheck, I got me some electronics. Had a little panic attack when I forgot to plug in power to the component and was wondering why it wasn't working, and it took me about 4 tries before I realized that. -_-

I now know I've missed at least 2 questions on the last midterm. But received two more homeworks back with full scores.

It sucks though that if we really wanted to, we still aren't able to finish our project, the first release of which is due on Monday, since we don't have POP accounts yet. On the other hand, it seems that they aren't really expecting us to really have a functioning project yet from what the professor's said in class about it.
