StarForce needs a new PR Manager
POSTED AT 11:24 AM in General

Oops, didn't blog. Anyway, this caught my interest.

Apparently, StarForce has threatened to sue BoingBoing for describing their copy protection as malware. StarForce should probably consider firing Dennis Zhidkov, their PR manager, for this. Getting bad press about your company by threatening to sue people isn't exactly good PR. Oh, and better watch out or you'll just get your company anti-SLAPPed.

Spice II
POSTED AT 01:21 AM in General

Went there for dinner with Xia today. Was originally going to go to Burma Super Star, but there was a long line, and she said she'd eaten there before and it wasn't that good.

So we went to Spice II, which was well, disappointing. All three dishes seemed about the same (we ordered from the family style section). We decided to skip the $1 per bowl rice. Cost around $20 total. We both agreed we should've stayed with Pay Sung Tong, which is cheaper and better. Part of the problem I guess was all the foods were too heavy taste-wise, and she felt there was way too much MSG. Oh, it also seems the restaurant's name is also a pun. It literally means "hot girls" in Chinese, and the waitresses there certainly are better looking than average.

Blizzard = Hypocrites
POSTED AT 10:35 PM in General, Gaming, Philosophy

"Topics related to sensitive real-world subjects - such as religious, sexual, or political preference, for example - have had a tendency to result in communication between players that often breaks down into harassment. To promote a positive game environment for everyone and help prevent such harassment from taking place as best we can, we prohibit mention of topics related to sensitive real-world subjects in open chat within the game, and we do our best to take action whenever we see such topics being broadcast."

What's wrong with this statement issued by Blizzard in regards to their citing a player for harrasment for advertising a GLBT-friendly guild? The fact that they do nothing about the blatantly Christian guilds in World of Warcraft.

Chronicles of Narnia
POSTED AT 11:55 PM in General

Finally watched it.

So... we were supposed to meet around 5:30, but after work, I checked the time and it had been moved till 7. So I call and we re-arrange. I go off to downtown so I can check out Borders for a bit, then I go to the bus stop, which I realized I didn't really need because the next stop was only 1 stop away. Anyway, so I arrive early, and Rebecca came late, because she stayed in her van in case the police came as she wasn't allowed to park there until 6. We ate at Golden King, and the portions were quite large, so worth the money. Then we rush off to Sony Metreon. I bought the rather expensive tickets while she looked for parking. There was some problem with the projector because the picture kept moving very slightly, which was very distracting and annoying anytime the scene was relatively still.

As for the movie itself... it's basically Lord of the Rings for kids. Which shouldn't be that surprising considering C.S. Lewis's interaction with J.R.R. Tolkien. No blood. The way they wielded the weapons felt rather weird. They tried to dramatize stuff that wasn't that dramatic in the book, for people who never read the book, and they added token frames like the good giant, who only had around 2 seconds of footage, just to appease the readers and say that they didn't forget, while implying they didn't think it was important enough to go into details. There were various other alterations, and I still think the captain of the secret police was an idiot. How the heck did he become a captain when he was stupid enough to impale himself on a sword held out towards him.

The White Witch reminded me a lot of the Elf queen in the LotR movie, whatever her name was.

Japantown day
POSTED AT 09:29 PM in General

So Charlie came back, so mostly-BSt people hung out again.

Lunch at Mifune, which has way too much noodle stuff for lunch. Ordered a Katsu don which was alright. Joyce brought two of her friends, who left after this. Charlie paid for everyone.

Then they wanted to karaoke, so we did so at Fillmore Karaoke, which is well, the WORST karaoke place I've been to so far. They had <40 Japanese songs total, and they're only a few blocks away! WTF?! So I didn't sing, and nor did I have to help split the cost becuase I didn't get anything out of it. I guess we should've tried Do Re Mi, which is within Japantown. Eric, Joyce, and Nancy left after this.

Then we had dinner again, and ended up eating in Japantown again at Seoul Garden. Expensive! But service is good. Food was decent. We also helped pay for Charlie's meal this time though because he paid for everyone at lunch.

Back to blah schoolwork.

Gamebooks and other high value printed material
POSTED AT 02:22 PM in General, Gaming

Several months ago, I mentioned Project Aon, which was created by fans of the out-of-print Lone Wolf series as a means to keep the series available for those who didn't have an opportunity to purcahse it. Turns out The Underdogs actually has a free gamebook section as well. Again, the problem is that PDFs are not really portable.

Gamebooks were a major part of my childhood. Together with magazines, and comics, I think they provide the most reusable value out of printed materials. Most books, you'll read it once, and never read it again. Maybe a second time, but usually not more than that.

Gamebooks were designed to be replayable, and even after going through them several times, it's quite likely I've still missed a lot of sections because I just never pick certain choices.

Magazines are fun to go back and read because I usually skim them the first time around. Articles aren't usually too long so you can read them when you don't have a lot of spare time, and you can compare the history within them to the present. They're also a lot more durable than newspapers.

Comics are short. And after a few years, you probably forget a lot of them, so they'll still provide you with entertainment when you read them again.

Stuff that doesn't make the list:
Newspapers - I already mentioned them. Not durable, and they tend to be large and unwieldy when you open them. This also includes the free magazines like SF Weekly. Bad quality paper not designed to last.

Textbooks - Sure, the information may be valuable. But they're *expensive* and usually thick and hardcover, which means *heavy*. Not something I'd wanna lug around. And newer editions means that the information in the old textbooks will probably be made obsolete in a few years. Also, they tend to be dry and the kind of stuff that will put me to sleep rather than keep me interested.

Learning security through obscurity?
POSTED AT 01:28 AM in General

Reading this cryptography book is like reading an encrypted text. Somehow, they can make very simple concepts that I already understood long ago into some complicated math formula that just completely boggles the mind. Lots of math symbols and variables to describe the concept of digits does not necessarily make it elegant nor useful.

Happy SAD! (Singles Awareness Day)
POSTED AT 10:10 PM in General

Well, it's not SAD yet where I'm at, but close enough, and it's almost over in some parts of the world, and I wanna go to sleep earlier.

I resurrected the Singles Awareness Day entry at Wikipedia, which some unscrupulous fool had redirected to the VDay page. After bringing it back, some Valentiners have tried to question its usefulness and even deleted the page. So watch out for sabotage by Valentiners over the next 24 or so hours. BTW, the VDay page has already been protected.

Oh, and it looks like I'm not the only person who doesn't get/like all that math in the book. O_O

More on SAD
POSTED AT 01:11 AM in General

So, aside from school, I spent the day embedding the notion of Singles Awareness Day into the minds of people by mentioning it on various high-traffic forums. I also defended the entry from vandalism on Wikipedia. I guess I consider it, as well as the Theistic Evolution entry as sort of my pet entries. Mainly because I rescued them from a possible lifetime of redirection to other less savory places. In the case of Theistic Evolution, I also succeeded in flipping the redirection around. And thus, people shall properly use Theistic Evolution over Evolutionary Creationism, and will properly associate February 14th with Singles Awareness Day, instead of the 13th or the 15th.

And that's the way propaganda works.

Night of Fire - HINOIチーム with コリッキー
POSTED AT 11:32 PM in General

So I stumbled on this video last night while loooking through some random videos:

It piqued my interest in the group and para para/eurobeat stuff again in general. It's not a genre I really listen to but I guess I like the style. Yoko Ishida's para para versions of anime songs was rather interesting for one, and I've been drawn to the odd eurobeat song once in a while as well. Diana mentioned before that I tend to like upbeat songs. I guess that's generally true and probably why I like them, because they tend to be rather fast.

But back to the song, videos, and the group. Here's the para para version of that first video:

And here's a version with Takuya Kimura from SMAP, along with a para para version of the Mickey Mouse March at the end:

I think this is also the original version of the song (which I guess was used for Initial D as well). As for the group itself, the first song I heard from them was "Ike Ike" song from Ichigo 100%, which was a cover song. Then again, the group only seems to do cover songs so far. But anyway, because of the para para nature of these songs, while listening to them is nice, they really need to be watched as well to get the full experience, at least the first time. And of course, Google Video and especially Youtube has the videos available for perusing.

Also, for some reason, watching the videos reminded me of Cyndi Wang's music videos... at least, the thought crossed my mind that she's probably suited for para para dancing.

And no, this sudden (renewed?) interest in para para does not mean I'm going to be para para dancing anytime soon, or even not-so-soon. Perish the thought.

And despite this major distraction for the day, I was still able to do quite a bit of work for two classes today (well, the one for my Security class really involved running my program and waiting many many many hours as it found various encryption/decryption key pairs, I estimate it'll be done by tomorrow), so I feel pretty productive.

Been coughing since last night. I think I caught it from some gun on Sunday in the library who seemed pretty sick and was sitting around 2-3 computers in front of me. POSTED AT 12:06 AM in General

So I took the day off from work. Did some homework instead at home. I also went to bed at like 9PM last night. That didn't work quite as well as expected. Woke up when my roommate came home, woke up again at 4:30, and finally slept till 9AM. But each time I tried to sleep, it would take me like one hour. I had some weird (fever-induced?) dreams where I had to align/construct unique pieces of blocks or something, and this was actually requiring some mental effort, which made it hard to sleep. Or it was some weird mixture of a daydream and actual sleep.

Nose is less runny, but cough has gotten worse again, but no phlegm. But stuffy nose when I try to sleep makes it hard to sleep.

Certain crappy spelling by native English speakers a sign of brain damage?
POSTED AT 11:28 AM in General

If you've been in forums, you've probably seen them. Heck, you're probably guilty of it yourself! What I'm talking about is people who consistently misspell "lying," "dying," and "paid" and so forth as "lieing," "dieing," and "payed." I seem to recall from my classes that this is the sort of mistake that very young children make when they first learn English. So if these adult, native English speakers are making the same mistakes, either they never learned the language properly in the first place, or they might be suffering from some neurological disorder that's hindering their ability to make the proper spelling.

Sunday Fever
POSTED AT 11:37 PM in General

Hehe, well that was a popular entry.

So last night sucked pretty bad. Woke up three times, about once every 2 hours. The first two times, I felt really hot, especially the first time, when it felt like my legs, of all places was burning up. But after that, my temperature felt fine. Had another odd dream state where my mind was under the impression that I had to accomplish stuff, and this time it was about having to achieve all the goals in several adventure games simultaneously. I think these dreams may be linked to some subconscious metaphor of fighting my illness consciously. Oh, and our dorm actually ran out of drinking water, so I had to buy myself a $1.25 bottle from the vending machine last night.

So because of that, I bought myself a thermometer (and much cheaper water). Although I felt ok by the time I bought it, it still registered my temperature at up to 100.7 fahrenheit. After discussing it with Xia, decided to also not go to work today. My boss probably didn't like that because I cancelled 30 minutes before work, so it's not like he could find a replacement. But it was probably a good idea, since today was cold (and actually rained later), so walking that mile uphill probably wouldn't have been good, especially because I don't think I would've brought my umbrella, so I would have been soaked coming back.

In the middle of the afternoon, my temperature dropped to about 99.x, but it's back up to around 100.x now. I'll see tonight if my temperature really does soar at night or if it's just my imagination.

My roommate's also been providing me with vitamins, so hopefully that's helping.

I still don't really have an appetite, and my sense of smell is also weird. It's like I can't detect certain smells, which accentuates the ones that I can detect, which makes many things just smell disgusting, which is probably part of the reason the food feel less appealing. Although I did have this craving for some hot soup, and while searching for nearby restaurants with soup, I found that there's a Boudin Bakery nearby. They serve clam chowder in sourdough bowls and they have a branch at the Fisherman's Wharf, which is the first and only time I had this, and I remember it was with my parents. I wonder if it was Boudin Bakery that time or some other shop. Anyway, went over, and I find it's closed on Sundays. Phooey. Eh well, bought a couple microwaveable clam chowder soups from Safeway and heated up the Campbell one for dinner. It was actually pretty nice (especially given the derisive remarks I've seen people make about Campbell stuff), and was probably the most appetizing thing I had all day.

So I actually managed to finish quite a bit of work this weekend, which is nice.
